Why Renew Now?

There is no other national association that is singularly focused on the needs of the hotel sector at this critical moment in our history. We need to bolster this advocacy work now in order to ensure the industry's survival.

A LONG ROAD BACK

The hotel industry was first hit and it will be the last to recover. It will need additional and continued support from the Government in order to survive. To accomplish this, the Association needs to augment and sustain its lobbying efforts until the hotel sector recovers.

Advocacy Success

 COVID YEAR ONE & TWO

Over the last 20 months, HAC has been working with the highest levels of Government to ensure that the hotel industry is supported through this pandemic.  This work has centered around the system design of support programs where HAC has played a key role in ensuring access for the hotel sector. As a result, we have influenced every program announced that had applicability to the sector, and have secured more than $11 Billion+ in liquidity and relief from the Federal Government.

SUPPORT FOR EMPLOYEES

Employment Measures

  • Secured substantial support for employees through CEWS and CERB

  • Influenced design of CEWS to include all hotels and increased subsidy from 10% to 75%, and a 25% top up for hard hit businesses

  • Successfully extended CEWS six times, most recently until October 2021

  • Reversed the wind-down of CEWS twice and ensured coverage to Fall 2021

  • Increased CEWS coverage to 75%,  announced in the 2020 Fall Economic Statement

  • Secured additional wage subsidy support for employees through the Canada Recovery Hiring Program (CRHP)

  • Secured commitment to provide targeted wage and fixed costs support through the Tourism and Hospitality Recovery Program until Spring 2022

SUPPORT FOR HOTELS

Liquidity & Relief

  • BCAP did not work – HAC successfully designed and built a new program – HASCAP – for hotels, with favourable terms

  • Gained hotel access to CERS - the Government's
    fixed cost relief program

  • Prevented the planned decrease of CERS and secured an extension to October 2021.

  • Successfully raised the eligibility threshold for CEBA to include more hoteliers

  • Secured HST/GST deferrals and mortgage deferrals

  • Secured industry support through the Tourism Relief Fund to help tourism businesses through recovery
